Start with license readiness
Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.
This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.
Next step: confirm your Wisconsin board status
Use DSPS and the relevant examining board before deciding whether to launch independently, stay supervised, join a group, or build a hybrid practice.
Wisconsin social-work accuracy trap
Do not let the ISW title imply independent psychotherapy authority. Wisconsin law limits psychotherapy by APSWs and ISWs to the required supervised path; LCSW is the full clinical social-work license.
Temporary and bridge credentials
Temporary LPC and MFT licenses are not stand-alone applications, and Act 10 bridge credentials are temporary while a permanent Wisconsin application is pending. Confirm expiration, renewal, supervision, permanent-license progress, and payer recognition before billing.
ForwardHealth labels are not DSPS licenses
ForwardHealth uses program labels such as licensed psychotherapist, certified psychotherapist, rendering provider, and group provider. Map those separately from DSPS license titles, supervision rules, and commercial payer recognition.
| Credential | Independent practice? | Supervision issue? | Entity/business note | Bomi relevance | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LPC — Licensed Professional Counselor | Generally yes for psychotherapy once the full Wisconsin LPC license is active. | Wisconsin separates the full LPC license from the Professional Counselor Training License. Confirm active status, scope, renewal, and any board conditions before launching. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup once the license, legal identity, public practice name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, malpractice, bank, EHR, service locations, and payer records match. | Strong fit for credentialing, payer enrollment, EFT/ERA, eligibility, claims, denials, and recredentialing. | Wisconsin DSPS Professional Counselor |
| Professional Counselor Training License | No ordinary independent solo-practice launch. Treat as supervised. | DSPS says this training license is required to accumulate supervised practice hours for full licensure. It is valid for 48 months and may be renewed at the Professional Counseling Section's discretion. | Use a supervised or group-practice model and verify the supervisor, setting, ForwardHealth provider role, commercial payer rules, rendering fields, and claim configuration before billing. | Bomi can support a supervised group workflow only when the group, supervisor, payer, and claim setup are compliant. | Wisconsin DSPS Professional Counselor |
| LMFT — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist | Generally yes for marriage and family therapy once the full Wisconsin LMFT license is active. | Wisconsin separates the full license from the MFT Training License. Confirm active status, scope, renewal, and any board conditions before launching. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup once the license, legal identity, public practice name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, bank, EHR, service locations, and payer records match. | Strong fit for credentialing, payer enrollment, EFT/ERA, claims, denials, and recredentialing. | Wisconsin DSPS Marriage and Family Therapist |
| MFT Training License | No ordinary independent solo-practice launch. Treat as supervised. | DSPS says the training license is required to accumulate supervised practice hours for full MFT licensure. It is valid for 48 months and subject to the section's renewal rules. | Use supervised or group-practice language. Do not assume direct commercial or ForwardHealth reimbursement without confirming the payer and enrollment model. | Bomi can help only when the group, supervisor, payer, and billing model are configured correctly. | Wisconsin DSPS Marriage and Family Therapist |
| LCSW — Licensed Clinical Social Worker | Generally yes for clinical social work and psychotherapy once the Wisconsin LCSW license is active. | The LCSW path includes post-degree supervised clinical practice. Confirm the full license is active and any board conditions are resolved before independent setup. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup once the license, legal identity, public practice name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, bank, EHR, service locations, and payer records match. | Strong fit for commercial payer enrollment, ForwardHealth setup, claims, denial follow-up, and recredentialing. | Wisconsin DSPS Licensed Clinical Social Worker |
| APSW / ISW — Advanced Practice or Independent Social Worker | Do not treat either credential as the same as LCSW for independent psychotherapy. | Wisconsin Stat. ch. 457 permits an APSW or ISW to engage in psychotherapy only under the supervision specified by law. The word “independent” in ISW does not make it an unsupervised psychotherapy credential. | Use a supervised clinical model. Confirm DSPS scope and supervision separately from any ForwardHealth “certified psychotherapist” provider category and from each commercial payer's reimbursement rules. | Bomi can track supervision, provider enrollment, and payer-specific recognition, but the setup must not overstate independent psychotherapy authority. | Wisconsin Statutes chapter 457 |
| CSW / Social Worker Training Certificate | No independent clinical psychotherapy launch. | Wisconsin's social-worker and training-certificate pathways are distinct from LCSW clinical licensure. Confirm permitted services, supervision, and the upgrade path with DSPS. | Do not configure either credential as a normal independent psychotherapy provider. Use training, nonclinical, or supervised-group framing as applicable. | Bomi support depends on the supervising organization and the exact payer model, if any. | Wisconsin DSPS Social Worker |
| Licensed Psychologist | Generally yes once the full Wisconsin psychologist license is active. | Confirm active status and any board conditions. Wisconsin also offers an interim license for certain doctoral graduates completing supervised experience or the national examination; that is a different path. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup once the license, legal identity, public practice name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, malpractice, bank, EHR, service locations, and payer records match. | Strong fit for commercial payer enrollment, ForwardHealth setup, claims, denials, and revenue operations. | Wisconsin DSPS Psychologist |
| Interim Psychologist | No ordinary independent long-term launch. Treat as interim and supervised. | DSPS describes the interim license as optional for doctoral graduates while completing supervised experience or passing the national examination. Psychological services under the interim credential remain subject to supervision. | Do not configure this as a normal solo payer setup without board and payer confirmation. Track supervision, full-license progress, and payer recognition. | Bomi can track credentialing risk and payer rules, but should not imply full independent psychologist status. | Wisconsin DSPS Psychologist |
